Appleby itself is quiet and friendly place with a wealth of tradition and history. At its heart is the main street of Boroughgate with its fine old buildings. This wide and graceful tree-lined thoroughfare links the medieval church of St. Lawrence with the striking castle. The town is well served with public amenities, shops, public houses and has a golf course and swimming pool. Overwood Place benefits from a footpath access to the town centre and the main Primary and Grammar Schools are both conveniently just one mile from Overwood Place.

Appleby is located off the main A66 which runs east from the M6 motorway - just 15 miles away at junction 40. Junction 38 is just under 12 miles away at Tebay. Appleby is served by the historic Settle-Carlisle railway line which connects Leeds with Carlisle to the north. Full intercity services along the main West Coast line can be picked up at Penrith station. Penrith, only 15 miles away, is a large bustling town offering supermarkets, many fine independent and speciality shops and leisure facilities. The major city of Carlisle is 33 miles away.

Appleby is served by the historic Settle-Carlisle railway which connects Leeds with Carlisle to the north. Full intercity services along the main West Coast railway line are available from Penrith.
